ASAL USUL DESA PENGANJANG (SINDANG)

Pada jaman dahulu ada seorang pemuda yang mempunyai keinginan untuk menjadi seorang pengembara. Pemuda itu bernama Jakatarub. Jakatarub adalah seorang pemuda yang bertubuh tegap, gagah dan cerdas. Demikianlah pengembaraan Jakatarub dari waktu ke waktu ditempuhnya denga penuh ketenangan dan ketabahan, meskipun banyak mengalami rintangan. Jakatarub berasal dari Solo. Ia sampai ke Indramayu sebelum Syarif Hidayatullah menyebarkan agama Islam di Cirebon. Karena takdir yang Maha Kuasa, maka Jakatarub akirnya sampai ke suatu tempat yang menjadi kisah tak terlupakan, terutama bagi orang-orang Indramayu.

Nama asli Jakatarub adalah Ki Gede Kirom, sedangkan nama julukannya yaitu Ki Gede Penganjang. Ki Gede Kirom mempunyai beberapa nama panggilan, diantaranya yaitu:
1.    Ki Jakatarub
2.    Ki Gede Penganjang
3.    Ki Gede Laha, karena ia sebagai pembuat “laha” (perikanan).

Disebut Ki Jakatarub karena dapat melindungi masyarakat pada waktu itu. Sedangkan nama Ki Gede Penganjang karena mulai saat itulah ditinggalkannya anjang-anjang.

Di tempat pengembaraannya itu, Jakatarub menemui beberapa bidadari yang sedang bersuka ria sambil mandi di sebuah telaga yang bening airnya. Tempat itu bernama Sumur Krapyak. Melihat kejadian itu, Jakatarub berkeinginan untuk menyaksikan lebih dekat agar lebih jelas siapa bidadari-bidadari itu. Ia mulai mengintai dari balik pepohonan yang ada di sekitar sumur.

Setelah bidadari itu puas bermain, maka pulanglah mereka ke kahyangan (langit). Tetapi salah satu dari mereka itu tidak dapat terbang karena baju antrakusumanya hilang. Jakatarub senang melihat bidadari itu tidak dapat pergi. Ia sengaja menyembunyikannya dengan tujuan supaya bidadari itu mau dijadikan istri. Kemudian ia menegur dan membujuk bidadari itu agar mau dikawini. Setelah permintaan Jakatarub itu dipenuhi, maka sejak saat itu mereka menjadi sepasang suami-istri yang bahagia. Dari istrinya itu, Jakatarub dikaruniai seorang anak yang diberi nama Atasangin. Di Banten Jakatarub berputra seorang lagi bernama Ki Gede Bagong.

Pada suatu hari istrinya ingin pergi memandikan anaknya ke sungai. Pada waktu itu periuk (tempat menanak nasinya) masih diterpanggang di atas api. Sebelum pergi, bidadari Nawangwulan (istri Jakatarub) itu berpesan kepada suaminya agar sekali-kali tidak membuka tutup periuk itu. Tetapi sebaliknya, sang suami (Jakatarub) itu merasa penasaran akan rahasia di balik larangan tersebut dan ingin membuka tutup periuk itu. Setelah dibuka, terlihat di dalamnya ada padi yang masih bersatu dengan tangkainya.

Setelah sampai di rumah, istrinya tahu bahwa suaminya telah membuka tutup periuk itu. Ia berkata kepada suaminya dengan nada kesal, “Mas, mulai sekarang buatlah lesung (alat menumbuk padi) dengan alunya untuk menumbuk padi, karena padi itu tidak dapat ditanak denga kulit dan tangkainya sebab kau telah membuka tutup periuknya tadi.” Demikianlah si istri tiap hari mengambil padi di lumbung untuk ditumbuk. Isi lumbung itupun makin lama makin sedikit hingga hampir habis.

Pada suatu hari si istri pergi mengambil padi lagi seperti biasa, tetapi dengan tak disangka-sangka ditemukannya baju antrakesumanya yang hilang. Mulai saat itulah Nawangwulan timbul keinginan utnuk kembali ke kahyangan. Jakatarub, sang suami, bertanya, “bagaimana dengan anak kita yang masih kecil dan masih menyusu ini? Apakah kau tega meninggalkannya?” “Ya apa boleh buat aku harus pergi,” jawab Nawangwulan, istrinya. “Untuk itu Mas harus membuat anjang-anjang yang dirambati tanaman labu putih. Jadi kalau anak kita ingin menyusu, letakkanlah anak itu di atas anjang-anjang. Kemudian bakarlah merang ketan hitam. Kalau saya mencium asapnya, saya akan turun ke bumi untuk menyusuinya.”

Demikianlah hal itu dilakukan oleh Jakatarub sampai anaknya besar dan tidak menyusu lagi. Itulah sebabnya sampai sekarang di Penganjang tidak boleh menanam labu putih dan menanam ketan hitam.

English Version:

In ancient times there was a young man who has the desire to become a wanderer. The young man named Jakatarub. Jakatarub was a burly, handsome and intelligent. Thus, Jakatarub's odyssey from time to time, he passed a full premises calmness and fortitude, although many experience obstacles. Jakatarub came from Solo. He got Indramayu before Sharif Hidayatullah's  spreading Islam in Cirebon. Because of  the fate of the Almighty, then Jakatarub got to a place that became an unforgettable story, especially for people of Indramayu.
The original name was Ki Gede Jakatarub Kirom, whereas his nickname was
Ki Gede Penganjang. Ki Gede Kirom had several nicknames, among them were:
A. Ki Jakatarub
2. Ki Gede Penganjang
3. Ki Gede Laha, because he is as a maker of "laha" (fisheries).
It was called Ki Jakatarub because he could protect the public at that time. While the name Ki Gede Penganjang was because from that time the "ajang-anjang" was left behind.
In place of the wanderings, Jakatarub met some fairies who were rejoicing while bathing in a lake of clear water. It was called the Krapyak
Well . Seeing the incident, Jakatarub was eager to watch more closely in order to be more clearly who the maidens were. He began stalking through the trees surrounding the well.
After the angels were happy to play, then they returned to the heaven (sky). But one of them could not fly because her "antrakusuma" clothes was missing. Jakatarub was pleased to see the angel could not go. He deliberately hid it in order so that the angel would be his wife. Then he admonished and persuaded the angel  to marry him. After the request fulfilled Jakatarub's will, since then they became a
happy couple. Of his wife, Jakatarub was blessed with a child who was named Atasangin. In Banten Jakatarub begot another son, named Ki Gede Bagong .
One day she wanted to go to the river to bathe their children. At that time the pot (where he cooked rice) was still on the fire. Before leaving, the angel Nawangwulan (Jakatarub's wife) told her husband not to open the lid of the pot. But instead, the husband (Jakatarub) that was curious about the secret behind the ban and would like to open the pot lid. Opening it, he looked that the rice was with the stalks.
After  arriving home, she knew that her husband had opened the lid of the pot. He said to her husband in a tone of exasperation, "Mas, from now, make the mortar (a tool to pound rice) and the
pestle to pound rice, because rice can not be cooked with the skin and stalk. because you've opened the lid of pot last." That was his wife took the rice in the barn to ground every day the barn's contain and even then less and less until its was almost gone.
One day the wife went to pick up the rice again as usual, but  unexpectedly she discovered the lost
"antrakesuma" suit. From that time, she had the desire to get back to the heaven. Jakatarub, her husband, asked, "what about our kids who are still little and still nursing? Are you  heartful to leave him?" "Well, but I  have to go," replied Nawangwulan, his wife. "For that case, You have to make an arbor that are covered with white pumpkin plants. So if he wants to suckle, place him in the arbor. Then, please burn the black sticky rice straw. If I smell the smoke, I'll come down to the earth to feed him."
Thus it was done by Jakatarub to suckle her child and untill nomore. That is why until now it was not allowed to plant pumpkins and white and black sticky rice plant
in Penganjang.

ASAL USUL DESA BANJAR (JATIBARANG)

Banjar adalah nama tempat di daerah Bulak Kecamatan Jatibarang Kab. Indramayu. Bajnar dikenal dengan nama Ki Buyut Banjar. Sampai sekarang terkenal dengan keranya. Berdasarkan cerita orang tua, asal usulnya adalah sebagai berikut.

Pada jaman dahulu ada lima kerajaan yang berkuasa di sini, yaitu:
1.    Pagusten Pangeran Suryanegara (dari Cirebon)
2.    Pangeran Mangkunegara (adik Pangeran Suryanegara), yang bertempat tinggal di desa Sleman.
3.    Pangeran Kartanegara, bertempat tinggal di kampong Karangkendal.
4.    Pangeran Martanegara, bertempat tinggal di gunung Jati.
5.    Pangeran Patmanegara, bertempat tinggal di Wanacala (sebelah Timur Cirebon).

Diantara kelima Pangeran itu, Pangeran Suryanegaralah yang paling berkuasa dan yang paling mempunyai kesaktian. Daerah yang dikuasainya yaitu: sebelah barat Bulak, Kedungwarak Bungkak, Kesambi Jamprah, Kedung, Tanahanila (Alas Sewu), sebelah timur Kedungwungu, Kedung Tambi, Sudikampiran, Cangkingan, Kedokan Utara, Jempatan Petakan. Di Jempatan Petakan inilah terdapat Sungai Longgagastina. Pangeran Suryanegara mengerahkan rakyatnya untuk bekerja membuat Kali Longgagastina tersebut. Pangeran Suryanegara mengutus Nyi Ayu Kelir dari daerah Kedokan supaya bekerja bersama-sama denga utusan dari kerajaan lainnya. Utusan dari Kedokan berjumlah 41 orang dipimpin oleh Ki Ratim. Utusan ini datang menghadap Pangeran Suryanegara dengan maksud menghadiri pembuatan kali tersebut, tapi sayang … kali yang dimaksud itu sudah selesai. Maka Pangeran Suryanegara marah. Katanya, “Malas, tak mau mentaati perintah, untuk apa datang kalau sungai Longgagastina sudah selesai.”

Karena kesalnya, akhirnya sang raja (Pangeran Suryanegara) mengeluarkan kata-kata yang sangat kejam (menurut istilah Indramayu “nyumpatani”), yaitu:
“Mulai saat ini kamu semua bukanlah manusia lagi, tetapi semuanya adalah kunyuk (kera), dan sebagai tempat tinggalmu saya beri nama Ki Buyut Banjar. Mulai saat inilah kamu menempati tempat ini. Kamu hanya dapat makan dari orang yang mempunyai kaul (nadzar), atau dari orang-orang yang lalu lalang di jalan itu. Kamu wajib meminta.”

Demikianlah kisah manusia menjadi kera, yang sampai sekarang kera itu berjumlah 41 ekor, dipimpin oleh seekor sebagi ketuanya. Menurut cerita, kera ketua itu adalah Ki Ratim sebagai pemimpin 41 orang dari desa Kedokan. Dengan adanya kera-kera tersebut, sudah menjadi kebiasaan masyarakat Indramayu setiap hari Lebaran mendatangi Ki Buyut Banjar ini. Mereka datang karena masih terpengaruh oleh adat jaman dahulu yang masih percaya akan ketakhyulan. Mereka beranggapan bahwa kera-kera itu sama dengan kita, karena mereka pada mulanya adalah manusia, maka berebutlah orang-orang datang membawa nasi dan makanan lainnya dengan maksud untuk memberi makan kera-kera itu.

ASAL USUL BEDUG KRAMAT JATISAWIT (JOKO BAJUL)

Pada zaman dahulu di desa Jatisawit tinggallah seorang laki-laki bernama Ki Kamal dengan  isterinya Nyi Santi. Pada waktu itu yang menjadi lurah adalah Ki Sardana yang  hanya mempunyai seorang anak gadis bernama Katijah. Pekerjaan Ki Kamal adalah mencari ikan di sungai atau laut. Kedua suami isteri itu hidup dengan sangat sederhana, sabar dan tawakkal walaupun tidak mempunyai anak. Tiap pagi sekitar jam 05.00, Ki Kamal pergi dengan membawa jala untuk mencari ikan. Sore harinya ikan itu dijual oleh Nyi Santi, isterinya.

Pada suatu hari, malam Kamis, Nyi Santi bermimpi kejatuhan pulung (mendapat rejeki). Pada pagi harinya, ternyata tak satupun ikan yang diperolehnya. Krn hari sudah sore, maka ia pulang dg membawa kembu (tempat ikan) yang kosong.  Di tengah jalan ia menemukan anak buaya. Setibanya di rumah, anak buaya tersebut ditaruh di suatu tempat dan dipeilhara seperti  layaknya manusia. Buaya tersebut memiliki keanehan, yaitu suka sekali makan nasi, sambal dan segala yang biasa dimakan manusia. Beberapa bulan kemudian, buaya tersebut tumbuh besar dan tak pernah mengganggu manusia.

Pada waktu terang bulan, ketika Ki Kamal dan Nyi santi sudah  tidur, buaya itu menjelma menjadi manusia yang ganteng dan menamakan dirinya Joko Bajul. Kemudian ia pergi mencari teman sampai ke rumah Ki Kuwu Sardana. Di situ terdapat banayak muda-mudi yang sedang berkumpul. Lama kelamaan  Katijah, anak Ki Kuwu, jatuh cinta kepada Joko Bajul. Oleh karena kegantengan Joko Bajul itu, Katijah minta supaya ayahnya mengawinkannya dengan Joko Bajul yg berpura-pura menjadi anak Ki Kamal.

Beberapa hari kemudian, Ki Sardana datang ke rumah Ki Kamal untuk meminta anaknya supaya mengawini Katijah. Ki Kamal mengatakan bahwa ia tdk mempunyai anak laki-laki, tetpai Ki Kuwu tidak percaya. Secara diam-diam Ki Kamal dan Nyi Santi menyelidiki perbuatan buaya itu, karena ia mengira bahwa buayalah yang menjelma menjadi manusia. Setelah diadakan penyelidikan, terbuktilah benar apa yang diperkirakan Ki kamal. Karena kasihan melihat sikap Ki Kuwu itu, akhirnya Joko Bajul dikawinkan dengan Katijah. Karena senangnya, maka pesta perkawinan itu diadakan selama tujuh hari tujuh malam.

Lama-kelamaan Jko Bajul bermaksud akan membawa isterinya ke negaranya sendiri, yaitu di dasar laut. Setelah diijinkan oleh orang tuanya, Katijah mengikti suaminya. Bajul mengajaknya ke tepi sungai, lalu Bajul membaca mantera sehingga air laut itu seakan tidak tampak lagi dan membantuk jalan besar. Di situ kedua suami-isteri dihormati oleh seluruh keluarga beserta teman-temannya dari dasar laut.

Joko Bajul tidak memiliki pekerjaan tetap, ia jarang tinggal di rumah. Sebelum pergi meninggalkan riumah, ia berpesan pada istrinya supaya tidak naik ke para (bagian atas langit-langit rumah). Memang sudah menjadi kebiasaan manusia melanggar sesuatu yang dilarangnya. Katijah naik ke atas para meski sudah dilarang suaminya. Ia ingin tahu mengapa suaminya melarangnya. Begitu sampai di atas para, sampailah ia ke daratan. Katijah merasa bingung dengan kejadian itu. Ia menangis sambil pulang ke rumah ayahnya.

Seminggu setelah kejadian itu, Joko Bajul datang ke rumah Ki Kuwu Jatisawit untuk menanyakan isterinya. Sesudah bertemu, Katijah tidak mau diajak kembali. Akhirnya ia berpesan kepada rakyat Jatisawit:
“Kalau nanti ada ribut-ribut di desa Jatisawit atau ada serangan dari desa lain, bunyikan bedug ini, nanti saya akan datang memberi bantuan”. Bedug itu dibuat oleh Joko Bajul sendiri da diserahkan kepada Kuwu Jatisawit. Sesudah pesan tersebut Bajul pulang ke negaranya, yaitu di dasar laut.

Karena merasa takut akan adanya peristiwa datangnya buaya itu, maka sampai sekarang di desa Jatisawit tidak pernah dibunyikan bedug. Akhirnya bedug tersebut dihanyutkan ke  sungai, dan masjid Jatisawit tidak memiliki bedug lagi.

The twins

Once upon a time there lived a woman who couldn’t have children. Because of that all her husbands kept leaving her. One day she was feeling so sad, miserable and lonely that she decided to go and see a witch doctor, for him to help her have a baby. The witch doctor said: “How can I help you? To have a baby you need a husband, and you haven’t got a husband!” She begged him to do everything in his power. In the end he relented; “OK, he said, I’ll see what I can do, but it won’t be easy. But as I’ve got a reputation to keep up, I’ll perform a miracle on you.” He gave the woman three limes and told her to take them home with her. “At the end of each day, he said, for the next three days, before you go to bed, make sure you have a bath. Wash your hands thoroughly. Take one of the limes and cut it in two, squeeze the juice, rub it on your tummy, your thighs and your hands.”

The woman followed these instructions exactly. After a few weeks, she noticed that her stomach and her thighs were getting big. She got worried, and went back to see the witchdoctor again to ask his advice. He told her not to worry, these were the signs that the magic was working. “You just have to go through with this, you will be fine,” he said. He added that once the children got big, and started to wonder about their father, she should tell them that the father is a one-eyed antelope.

As time went by, she got bigger and bigger. After nine months her left thigh just opened up and a baby boy jumped out. Then her stomach opened up and a baby girl jumped out. She was very happy that at last she was a mother, and for some time they lived happily like any normal family. She called the boy Atta, and the girl she called Attakuma. As the children grew older, they became very headstrong. They always did exactly what they liked and took little or no notice of their mother’s wishes or commands.

One day when her twins were about ten years old, the woman told them: Your dad is not a human. He is an antelope with one eye. If you go hunting and you come across a one-eyed antelope, don’t kill it, it could be your father. The children promised her they would never kill any one eyed antelopes.

One day the twins went hunting. They walked really far searching the jungle for meat. They spent all day searching, then decided to go back home empty handed. One the way back they encountered a one-eyed antelope. Atta said to his sister: “Look at the size of that antelope! Let’s shoot it and take it home.” “No no, no, said Attakuma, remember what our mother told us, if we shoot it, we might be killing our father!” Atta turned to his sister and snorted: “What!? You believe that stuff? How can our father be an animal. No way, that’s impossible!” With that he raised his bow and shot the antelope right in its heart. The beast died immediately. But the animal was so big and heavy that it was impossible for them to carry. They had to make some rope, tied it round the animal and dragged it all the way back home. Their mother hadn’t returned from the market yet, so they set about cooking a delicious meal. When mother got home she was very pleased to find that her children had prepared a meal for her, and set down immediately to eat. But after a few bites, she thought this meat tasted just like antelope meat. She called out to her children: “Is this antelope meat I’m eating? Did you kill an antelope today?” “Yes” replied Atta. The mother screamed and threw her food away. “Oh, lord Oh lord; the witchdoctor warned me about this. What am I going to do, I’m sick and tired; these children of mine, they never listen, they always disobey me.”

The next day she went out and bought two chairs. These chairs she took to Mister Death, and explained to him that she’ll be sending her twins along later to collect the chairs. “When they get here, she said, I want you to capture them, and take them to the other side for me.” Death agreed to this quite happily. The woman went home and told her children she had just bought two chairs for them, but they were too heavy for her to carry, so she left them with the merchant. So the twins set out to fetch the chairs from the merchant. When they got to Death’s house he told them to sit and wait while he got the chairs from the back. But he came back with a rope, and tried to tie them up. The twins however were far too quick and smart for him, and got away. Back home, they told their mother what had happened. “That nasty man tried to kill us!” Attakuma said. “No. no, said the mother, you must have done something to upset him” But she was upset that her plan hadn’t worked.

A few days later she tried again. This time she bought some bread, and left it with Death, and asked her twins to collect it for her. But Attakuma had a plan. She told her brother to go to the front of Death’s house, and ask for the bread. This Atta did. In the meantime Attakuma went round the back of the house, and found the rope. She knew Death would come and get the rope to tie up Atta, so she waited on the roof, and when Death came outside, she jumped on him and tied him up. On the way home, Atta said to his sister: “Our mother is trying to get rid of us. We must leave the village before she succeeds in her plans one of these days.” They decided they would have to run away from home, but the were sure that their mother would come after them, so they had to find a way to stop her. The next day, while their mother was working in the market, they dug a big hole in the backyard, where everybody always washed. They covered it with a few branches and some leaves, and filled a bucket with water, which they left on the other side of the trap. They prepared some food and waited for their mother to come home. After she had eaten, Attakuma said to her, “We filled a bucket with water for your bath, and left it outside for you.” Mother was pleasantly surprised at these little kindnesses, but unfortunately for her, she didn’t suspect anything. She went out into the backyard to have her bath; in the dark she didn’t see the trap her children had laid, and fell into the hole. Atta and Attakuma left straight away and walked all night. They knew that one of the neighbours would find their mother soon enough, and they wanted to get as far away as possible.

Early the next morning they came across a small hut, where they found an old blind man. He was very old, and had a long white beard, and he was cooking some food in front of his hut. The children stopped, and Atta said to him: “What a pity! An old man like you having to cook your own food! Don’t you have any children? You can’t even see anything!” The old man grunted: “I’m here on my own. Everybody else left this village a long time ago.” Attakuma said: “Don’t worry old man, we’ll help you cook your food.”
So the twins set about cooking the food, but then they ate it all by themselves, while the old man sat back and waited. After they had finished the food, the filled a bowl with water and put it in front of the old man. They told him the food was ready, and to go ahead and enjoy it. Then they set off on the path again, leaving the poor old man to discover that he’d been tricked. As they walked away they heard him shouting and cursing them, but they just laughed. They kept walking through the bush.

The next day they met an old woman on a small farm. She was crawling around on the soil, planting groundnuts. Atta said to her: “What? What a shame! You shouldn’t be working at your age! Give us the bowl and we’ll plant those groundnuts for you.” The old lady was very grateful for a little help, and she gladly gave them the bowl. She chuckled: “I’ll go and sit over there in the shade and watch you children work!” The twins started work, Atta digging holes in the ground with his bare hands, and Attakuma following behind, filling them up again with soil. Instead of putting the nuts in the soil, she put hid them in a sack that was tied around her neck. After a while they noticed that the old woman had dozed off, and they wandered off, eating the nuts for their supper. When the woman woke up, she went round to inspect the children’s work, and could find no nuts in any of the holes. She cursed the children, but blamed herself for putting her trust in these vagabonds.

The next day the twins came across another old woman, sitting outside her hut. She had a small girl on her lap, who’d been hurt, and she was cleaning the wound. The twins approached her to have a good look. Attakuma said to her: “What are you doing there? That water should be hot! That wound looks very bad, you’ll never clean it with cold water!” The looked around and saw a fire burning by the side of the house. Atta took the bucket with the water, and heated it over the fire. “We’ll show you how to do it,” he said, laughing. When the water was hot, he brought it over and put the bucket on the ground next to the old woman. “Give me the baby, Atta said to the woman, we’ll get her fixed up in no time!” He took the girl from the woman’s lap, and held her over the bucket filled with hot water. The old woman didn’t like the look of this, and she jumped up, grabbing her stick. As she did so, she kicked over the bucket, and the hot water spilled over her feet, scalding them. She started screaming and waving her stick at the twins, at which Atta dropped the little girl, and he and Attakuma ran away, laughing. The old woman was furious, and decided to follow them so that she could teach them a lesson. First she wrapped some old cloth around her scalded feet, then she tied the girl onto her back. She picked up her stick, and followed the twins. But of course they were much quicker than she could ever be, and she couldn’t see them. But she was so furious that she was determined to catch up with them. She went to see an old witchdoctor who lived nearby, and told him what had happened. The witchdoctor agreed that she should go after these nasty youngsters and punish them. He gave her a stick, and said: “Tap this stick on the ground three times, and you will be able to see their footprints, to show you where they went. Just follow the footprints and you will catch up with them.”

At one end of the stick were three small branches, one was covered in gold, one in cowries and the other in kente cloth. The old lady thanked him, and went on her way, back to her hut, so that she could discover their tracks. When she got there, she hit the stick on the ground three times, as she had been told, and the ends of the stick started to glow. Soon the twins’ footprints became visible to her, and she followed them.

The twins had been resting a little further along the way, when they heard the old lady approaching. They didn’t want the old lady to find hem so they climbed the tallest tree they could find to hide in the foliage. But the old lady had spotted them, and walked right up to the tree where they were hiding. She hit the trunk of the tree three times with the stick the witchdoctor had given her, and the whole tree began to shake violently. The twins couldn’t hold on and the both fell out. Before he fell, Atta managed to grab a leaf from his sack, and chewed it as he was falling, so that when he hit the ground he wasn’t hurt. But Attakuma didn’t move, she just lay there as if dead. Atta took the chewed up leaf from his mouth, and squeezed some of the juice in his sister’s nostril upon which she immediately regained consciousness.

They ran away as fast as they could, the old lady following at her own slow pace. Presently they came to a very big river, they could only just make out the other side. They knew that in order to escape the old woman pursuing them they would have to get across the water. Just then a large vulture landed on the riverbank. They ran up to the bird and asked for its help. “We’re being pursued by an old with, explained Attakuma, and she wants to kill us! We have to get to the other side of the water, please help us!” The vulture agreed to help them, and told them to climb on his back. He flew up easily and was over on the other side of the river in no time. After the children climbed off his back, Atta said to the vulture: “Be careful if you see that old woman. She might ask you to take her across as well, because she appears quite determined to catch us!”
Attakuma joined in: “If she asks you, you should say yes, certainly, but then make sure you drop her in the middle of the water! I’m sure she can’t swim!” The vulture just grinned. “Don’t you youngsters worry about me, he said. I’m quite capable of looking after myself.” As he flew back across the water, the twins decided to stay a while, and see what would happen.

The vulture returned to the other side of the river, and there he saw the old woman carrying her grandchild on her back, sitting in the sand, rubbing her poor aching feet, exhausted by her efforts. He greeted her and asked her if she was the one chasing a boy and a girl across the bush. The old woman confirmed that she was indeed the one, and then explained to the vulture what they had done to her and her granddaughter, and how, with the help of the witchdoctor’s stick, she had been able to follow them. The vulture was shocked and agreed to help the old woman teach the twins a lesson. He asked to borrow the magic stick, which he took in his strong beak, and went in search of a large piece of flotsam. He soon found something suitable, and lifted it up with his claws. Then he flew high up over the water, carrying the stick in his beak, and the flotsam in his claws. When he was over the middle of the water, he dropped the flotsam, which landed in the water with a big splash. The twins were on the other side of the water, watching the vulture. They saw him drop a large shape, and they assumed that this was the old lady. They cheered loudly, and watched as the vulture made his way towards them. “Well done, vulture! That taught the old hag a lesson!” they shouted.

The vulture now hovered over them with the magic stick. First he hit Atta on the head with it, then Attakuma. Atta shouted “Hey, mister vulture, what are you doing?” Attakuma just screamed. Their legs, their feet and their toes turned into roots, and dug into the sand at the water’s edge, their bodies turned into tree trunks, and their heads, arms, hands and fingers turned into branches. As leaves started to grow on the branches, a few moans were heard, then all fell silent except for the leaves rustling in the wind, and the sound of water lapping the roots. That’s how mangrove trees came to grow by the side of the river.

Pada jaman dahulu kala, ada seorang pemuda bernama Manik Angkeran. Ayahnya seorang Begawan yang berbudi pekerti luhur, yang bernama Begawan Sidi mantra. Walaupun ayahnya seorang yang disegani oleh masyarakat sekitar dan memiliki pengetahuan agama yang luas, tetapi Manik Angkeran adalah seorang anak yang manja, yang kerjanya hanya berjudi dan mengadu ayam seperti berandalan-berandalan yang ada di desanya.Mungkin ini karena ia telah ditinggal oleh Ibunya yang meninggal sewaktu melahirkannya. Karena kebiasaannya itu, kekayaan ayahnya makin lama makin habis dan akhirnya mereka jatuh miskin.

Walaupun keadaan mereka sudah miskin, kebiasaan Manik Angkeran tidak juga berkurang, bahkan karena dalam berjudi ia selalu kalah, hutangnya makin lama makin banyak dan ia pun di kejar-kejar oleh orang-orang yang dihutanginya. Akhirnya datanglah Manik ketempat ayahnya, dan dengan nada sedih ia meminta ayahnya untuk membayar hutang-hutangnya. Karena Manik Angkeran adalah anak satu-satunya, Begawan Sidi Mantra pun merasa kasihan dan berjanji akan membayar hutang-hutang anaknya.
Maka dengan kekuatan batinnya, Begawan Sidi Mantra mendapat petunjuk bahwa ada sebuah Gunung yang bernama Gunung Agung yang terletak di sebelah timur. Di Gunung Agung konon terdapat harta yang melimpah. Berbekal petunjuk tersebut, pergilah Begawan Sidi Mantra ke Gunung Agung dengan membawa genta pemujaannya.

Setelah sekian lama perjalanannya, sampailah ia ke Gunung Agung. Segeralah ia mengucapkan mantra sambil membunyikan gentanya. Dan keluarlah seekor naga besar bernama Naga Besukih.
“Hai Begawan Sidi Mantra, ada apa engkau memanggilku?” tanya sang Naga Besukih.
“Sang Besukih, kekayaanku telah dihabiskan anakku untuk berjudi. Sekarang karena hutangnya menumpuk, dia dikejar-kejar oleh orang-orang. Aku mohon, bantulah aku agar aku bisa membayar hutang anakku!”
“Baiklah, aku akan memenuhi permintaanmu Begawan Sidi Mantra, tapi kau harus menasehati anakmu agar tidak berjudi lagi, karena kau tahu berjudi itu dilarang agama!”

“Aku berjanji akan menasehati anakku” jawab Begawan Sidi Mantra.
Kemudian Sang Naga Besukih menggetarkan badannya dan sisik-sisiknya yang berjatuhan segera berubah emas dan intan.
“Ambillah Begawan Sidi Mantra. Bayarlah hutang-hutang anakmu. Dan jangan lupa nasehati dia agar tidak berjudi lagi.”

Sambil memungut emas dan intan serta tak lupa mengucapkan terima kasih, maka Begawan Sidi Mantra segera pergi dari Gunung Agung. Lalu pulanglah ia ke rumahnya di Jawa Timur. Sesampainya dirumah, di bayarlah semua hutang anaknya dan tak lupa ia menasehati anaknya agar tidak berjudi lagi.
Tetapi rupanya nasehat ayahnya tidak dihiraukan oleh Manik Angkeran. Dia tetap berjudi dan mengadu ayam setiap hari. Lama-kelamaan, hutang Manik Angkeran pun semakin banyak dan ia pun di kejar-kejar lagi oleh orang-orang yang dihutanginya. Dan seperti sebelumnya, pergilah Manik Angkeran menghadap ayahnya dan memohon agar hutang-hutangnya dilunasi lagi.

Walaupun dengan sedikit kesal, sebagai seorang ayah, Begawan Sidi Mantra pun berjanji akan melunasi hutang-hutang tersebut. Dan segera ia pun pergi ke Gunung Agung untuk memohon kepada Sang Naga Besukih agar diberikan pertolongan lagi.

Sesampainya ia di Gunung Agung, dibunyikannya genta dan membaca mantra-mantra agar Sang Naga Besukih keluar dari istananya.
Tidak beberapa lama, keluarlah akhirnya Sang Naga Besukih dari istananya.

“Ada apa lagi Begawan Sidi Mantra? Mengapa engkau memanggilku lagi?” tanya Sang Naga Besukih.
“Maaf Sang Besukih, sekali lagi aku memohon bantuanmu agar aku bisa membayar hutang-hutang anakku. Aku sudah tidak punya apa-apa lagi dan aku sudah menasehatinya agar tidak berjudi, tapi ia tidak menghiraukanku.” mohon Begawan Sidi Mantra.
“Anakmu rupanya sudah tidak menghormati orang tuanya lagi. Tapi aku akan membantumu untuk yang terakhir kali. Ingat, terakhir kali.”

Maka Sang Naga menggerakkan tubuhnya dan Begawan Sidi Mantra mengumpulkan emas dan permata yang berasal dari sisik-sisik tubuhnya yang berjatuhan. Lalu Begawan Sidi Mantra pun memohon diri. Dan setiba dirumahnya, Begawan Sidi Mantra segera melunasi hutang-hutang anaknya.
Karena dengan mudahnya Begawan Sidi Mantra mendaptkan harta, Manik Angkeran pun merasa heran melihatnya. Maka bertanyalah Manik Angkeran kepada ayahnya, “Ayah, darimana ayah mendapatkan semua kekayaan itu?”

“Sudahlah Manik Angkeran, jangan kau tanyakan dari mana ayah mendapat harta itu. Berhentilah berjudi dan menyabung ayam, karena itu semua dilarang oleh agama. Dan inipun untuk terakhir kalinya ayah membantumu. Lain kali apabila engkau berhutang lagi, ayah tidak akan membantumu lagi.”
Tetapi ternyata Manik Angkeran tidak dapat meninggalkan kebiasaan buruknya itu, ia tetap berjudi dan berjudi terus. Sehingga dalam waktu singkat hutangnya sudah menumpuk banyak. Dan walaupun ia sudah meminta bantuan ayahnya, ayahnya tetap tidak mau membantunya lagi. Sehingga ia pun bertekad untuk mencari tahu sumber kekayaan ayahnya.

Bertanyalah ia kesana kemari, dan beberapa temannya memberitahu bahwa ayahnya mendapat kekayaan di Gunung Agung. Karena keserakahannya, Manik Angkeran pun mencuri genta ayahnya dan pergi ke Gunung Agung.

Sesampai di Gunung Agung, segeralah ia membunyikan genta tersebut. Mendengar bunyi genta, Sang Naga Besukih pun merasa terpanggil olehnya, tetapi Sang Naga heran, karena tidak mendengar mantra-mantra yang biasanya di ucapkan oleh Begawan Sidi Mantra apabila membunyikan genta tersebut.
Maka keluarlah San Naga untuk melihat siapa yang datang memangilnya.

Setelah keluar, bertemulah Sang Naga dengan Manik Angkeran. Melihat Manik Angkeran, Sang Naga Besukih pun tidak dapat menahan marahnya.

“Hai Manik Angkeran! Ada apa engkau memanggilku dengan genta yang kau curi dari ayahmu itu?”
Dengan sikap memelas, Manik pun berkata “Sang Naga bantulah aku. Berilah aku harta yang melimpah agar aku bisa membayar hutang-hutangku. Kalau kali ini aku tak bisa membayarnya, orang-orang akan membunuhku. Kasihanilah aku.”

Melihat kesedihan Manik Angkeran, Sang Naga pun merasa kasihan.
“Baiklah, aku akan membantumu.” jawab Sang Naga Besukih.

Setelah memberikan nasehat kepada Manik Angkeran, Sang Naga segera membalikkan badannya untuk mengambil harta yang akan diberikan ke Manik Angkeran. Pada saat Sang Naga membenamkan kepala dan tubuhnya kedalam bumi untuk mengambil harta, Manik Angkeran pun melihat ekor Sang Naga yang ada dipemukaan bumi dipenuhi oleh intan dan permata, maka timbullah niat jahatnya. Manik Angkeran segera menghunus keris dan memotong ekor Sang Naga Besukih. Sang Naga Besukih meronta dan segera membalikkan badannya. Akan tetapi, Manik Angkeran telah pergi. Sang Naga pun segera mengejar Manik ke segala penjuru, tetapi ia tidak dapat menemukan Manik Angkeran, yang ditemui hanyalah bekas tapak kaki Manik Angkeran.

Maka dengan kesaktiannya, Sang Naga Besukih membakar bekas tapak kaki Manik Angkeran. Walaupun Manik Angkeran sudah jauh dari Sang Naga, tetapi dengan kesaktian Sang Naga Besukih, ia pun tetap merasakan pembakaran tapak kaki tersebut sehingga tubuh Manik Angkeran terasa panas sehingga ia rebah dan lama kelamaan menjadi abu.

Di Jawa Timur, Begawan Sidi Mantra sedang gelisah karena anaknya Manik Angkeran telah hilang dan genta pemujaannya juga hilang. Tetapi Begawan Sidi Mantra tah

u kalau gentanya diambil oleh anaknya Manik Angkeran dan merasa bahwa anaknya pergi ke Gunung Agung menemui Sang Naga Besukih. Maka berangkatlah ia ke Gunung Agung.

Sesampainya di Gunung Agung, dilihatnya Sang Naga Besukih sedang berada di luar istananya. Dengan tergesa-gesa Begawan Sidi Mantra bertanya kepada Sang Naga Besukih “Wahai Sang Besukih, adakah anakku Manik Angkeran datang kemari?”

“Ya, ia telah datang kemari untuk meminta harta yang akan dipakainya untuk melunasi hutang-hutangnya. Tetapi ketika aku membalikkan badan hendak mengambil harta untuknya, dipotonglah ekorku olehnya. Dan aku telah membakarnya sampai musnah, karena sikap anakmu tidak tahu balas budi itu. Sekarang apa maksud kedatanganmu kemari, Begawan Sidi Mantra?”
“Maafkan aku, Sang Besukih! Anakku Cuma satu, karena itu aku mohon agar anakku dihidupkan kembali.” mohon Sang Begawan.

“Demi persahabatan kita, aku akan memenuhi permintaanmu. Tapi dengan satu syarat, kembalikan ekorku seperti semula.” kata Sang Naga Besukih.
“Baiklah, aku pun akan memenuhi syaratmu!” jawab Begawan Sidi Mantra.
Maka dengan mengerahkan kekuatan mereka masing-masing, Manik Angkeran pun hidup kembali. Demikian pula dengan ekor Sang Naga Besukih bisa kembali utuh seperti semula.

Dinasehatinya Manik Angkeran oleh Sang Naga Besukih dan Begawan Sidi Mantra secara panjang lebar dan setelah itu pulanglah Begawan Sidi Mantra ke Jawa Timur. Tetapi Manik Angkeran tidak boleh ikut pulang, ia harus tetap tinggal di sekitar Gunung Agung. Karena Manik Angkeran sudah sadar dan berubah, ia pun tidak membangkang dan menuruti perintah ayahnya tersebut.

Dan dalam perjalanan pulangnya, ketika Begawan Sidi Mantra sampai di Tanah Benteng, di torehkannya tongkatnya ke tanah untuk membuat batas dengan anaknya. Seketika itu pula bekas torehan itu bertambah lebar dan air laut naik menggenanginya. Dan lama kelamaan menjadi sebuah selat. Selat itulah yang sekarang di beri nama “Selat Bali”.

Asal Usul Danau Toba

  Pada zaman dahulu di suatu desa di Sumatera Utara hiduplah seorang petani bernama Toba yang menyendiri di sebuah lembah yang landai dan subur. Petani itu mengerjakan lahan pertaniannya untuk keperluan hidupnya.
Selain mengerjakan ladangnya, kadang-kadang lelaki itu pergi memancing ke sungai yang berada tak jauh dari rumahnya. Setiap kali dia memancing, mudah saja ikan didapatnya karena di sungai yang jernih itu memang banyak sekali ikan. Ikan hasil pancingannya dia masak untuk dimakan.

Pada suatu sore, setelah pulang dari ladang lelaki itu langsung pergi ke sungai untuk memancing. Tetapi sudah cukup lama ia memancing tak seekor iakan pun didapatnya. Kejadian yang seperti itu,tidak pernah dialami sebelumnya. Sebab biasanya ikan di sungai itu mudah saja dia pancing. Karena sudah terlalu lama tak ada yang memakan umpan pancingnya, dia jadi kesal dan memutuskan untuk berhenti saja memancing. Tetapi ketika dia hendak menarik pancingnya, tiba-tiba pancing itu disambar ikan yang langsung menarik pancing itu jauh ketengah sungai. Hatinya yang tadi sudah kesal berubah menjadi gembira, Karena dia tahu bahwa ikan yang menyambar pancingnya itu adalah ikan yang besar.

Setelah beberapa lama dia biarkan pancingnya ditarik ke sana kemari, barulah pancing itu disentakkannya, dan tampaklah seekor ikan besar tergantung dan menggelepar-gelepar di ujung tali pancingnya. Dengan cepat ikan itu ditariknya ke darat supaya tidak lepas. Sambil tersenyum gembira mata pancingnya dia lepas dari mulut ikan itu. Pada saat dia sedang melepaskan mata pancing itu, ikan tersebut memandangnya dengan penuh arti. Kemudian, setelah ikan itu diletakkannya ke satu tempat dia pun masuk ke dalam sungai untuk mandi. Perasaannya gembira sekali karena belum pernah dia mendapat ikan sebesar itu. Dia tersenyum sambil membayangkan betapa enaknya nanti daging ikan itu kalau sudah dipanggang. Ketika meninggalkan sungai untuk pulang kerumahnya hari sudah mulai senja.

Setibanya di rumah, lelaki itu langsung membawa ikan besar hasil pancingannya itu ke dapur. Ketika dia hendak menyalakan api untuk memanggang ikan itu, ternyata kayu bakar di dapur rumahnya sudah habis. Dia segera keluar untuk mengambil kayu bakar dari bawah kolong rumahnya. Kemudian, sambil membawa beberapa potong kayu bakar dia naik kembali ke atas rumah dan langsung menuju dapur.
Pada saat lelaki itu tiba di dapur, dia terkejut sekali karena ikan besar itu sudah tidak ada lagi. Tetapi di tempat ikan itu tadi diletakkan tampak terhampar beberapa keping uang emas. Karena terkejut dan heran mengalami keadaan yang aneh itu, dia meninggalkan dapur dan masuk kekamar.

Ketika lelaki itu membuka pintu kamar, tiba-tiba darahnya tersirap karena didalam kamar itu berdiri seorang perempuan dengan rambut yang panjang terurai. Perempuan itu sedang menyisir rambutnya sambil berdiri menghadap cermin yang tergantung pada dinding kamar. Sesaat kemudian perempuan itu tiba-tiba membalikkan badannya dan memandang lelaki itu yang tegak kebingungan di mulut pintu kamar. Lelaki itu menjadi sangat terpesona karena wajah perempuan yang berdiri dihadapannya luar biasa cantiknya. Dia belum pernah melihat wanita secantik itu meskipun dahulu dia sudah jauh mengembara ke berbagai negeri.
Karena hari sudah malam, perempuan itu minta agar lampu dinyalakan. Setelah lelaki itu menyalakan lampu, dia diajak perempuan itu menemaninya kedapur karena dia hendak memasak nasi untuk mereka. Sambil menunggu nasi masak, diceritakan oleh perempuan itu bahwa dia adalah penjelmaan dari ikan besar yang tadi didapat lelaki itu ketika memancing di sungai. Kemudian dijelaskannya pula bahwa beberapa keping uang emas yang terletak di dapur itu adalah penjelmaan sisiknya. Setelah beberapa minggu perempuan itu menyatakan bersedia menerima lamarannya dengan syarat lelaki itu harus bersumpah bahwa seumur hidupnya dia tidak akan pernah mengungkit asal usul istrinya myang menjelma dari ikan. Setelah lelaki itu bersumpah demikian, kawinlah mereka.

Setahun kemudian, mereka dikaruniai seorang anak laki-laki yang mereka beri nama Samosir. Anak itu sngat dimanjakan ibunya yang mengakibatkan anak itu bertabiat kurang baik dan pemalas.
Setelah cukup besar, anak itu disuruh ibunya mengantar nasi setiap hari untuk ayahnya yang bekerja di ladang. Namun, sering dia menolak mengerjakan tugas itu sehingga terpaksa ibunya yang mengantarkan nasi ke ladang.

Suatu hari, anak itu disuruh ibunya lagi mengantarkan nasi ke ladang untuk ayahnya. Mulanya dia menolak. Akan tetapi, karena terus dipaksa ibunya, dengan kesl pergilah ia mengantarkan nasi itu. Di tengah jalan, sebagian besar nasi dan lauk pauknya dia makan. Setibanya diladang, sisa nasi itu yang hanya tinggal sedikit dia berikan kepada ayahnya. Saat menerimanya, si ayah sudah merasa sangat lapar karena nasinya terlambat sekali diantarkan. Oleh karena itu, maka si ayah jadi sangat marah ketika melihat nasi yang diberikan kepadanya adalah sisa-sisa. Amarahnya makin bertambah ketika anaknya mengaku bahwa dia yang memakan sebagian besar dari nasinya itu. Kesabaran si ayah jadi hilang dan dia pukul anaknya sambil mengatakan: “Anak kurang ajar. Tidak tahu diuntung. Betul-betul kau anak keturunan perempuan yang berasal dari ikan!”

Sambil menangis, anak itu berlari pulang menemui ibunya di rumah. Kepada ibunya dia mengadukan bahwa dia dipukuli ayahnya. Semua kata-kata cercaan yang diucapkan ayahnya kepadanya di ceritakan pula. Mendengar cerita anaknya itu, si ibu sedih sekali, terutama karena suaminya sudah melanggar sumpahnya dengan kata-kata cercaan yang dia ucapkan kepada anaknya itu. Si ibu menyuruh anaknya agar segera pergi mendaki bukit yang terletak tidak begitu jauh dari rumah mereka dan memanjat pohon kayu tertinggi yang terdapat di puncak bukit itu. Tanpa bertanya lagi, si anak segera melakukan perintah ibunya itu. Dia berlari-lari menuju ke bukit tersebut dan mendakinya.

Ketika tampak oleh sang ibu anaknya sudah hampir sampai ke puncak pohon kayu yang dipanjatnya di atas bukit , dia pun berlari menuju sungai yang tidak begitu jauh letaknya dari rumah mereka itu. Ketika dia tiba di tepi sungai itu kilat menyambar disertai bunyi guruh yang megelegar. Sesaat kemudian dia melompat ke dalam sungai dan tiba-tiba berubah menjadi seekor ikan besar. Pada saat yang sama, sungai itu pun banjir besar dan turun pula hujan yang sangat lebat. Beberapa waktu kemudian, air sungai itu sudah meluap kemana-mana dan tergenanglah lembah tempat sungai itu mengalir. Pak Toba tak bisa menyelamatkan dirinya, ia mati tenggelam oleh genangan air. Lama-kelamaan, genangan air itu semakin luas dan berubah menjadi danau yang sangat besar yang di kemudian hari dinamakan orang Danau Toba. Sedang Pulau kecil di tengah-tengahnya diberi nama Pulau Samosir.

Besides working on his farm, he sometimes went fishing to the river which was not far from his home. Each time he was fishing, simply because the fish in the river gets clear it is a lot of fish. Pancingannya he cooked the fish to eat.
 
One afternoon, after returning from the fields he went straight to the river for fishing. But it was quite a long time he did not provoke any iakan gets. Events like that, never experienced before. Because usually fish in the river he was fishing was easy. Since it was too long no one takes the bait rod, he gets upset and decides to quit fishing. But when he was about to pull rod, reel it suddenly struck by a fish hook pulled it away ketengah river. Then, after he placed the fish into a pail, he got into the river to bathe. His feeling elated because he had never got that big fish. He smiled as he imagined how nice the fish meat when it's baked. When leaving the river to return to, his house was getting dusk.
 
Arriving home, he immediately brought the big fish to the kitchen. When he was about to light a fire for grilling fish, the firewood in the kitchen of his house was gone. He immediately went out to get firewood from the ground under his house. Then, with a few pieces of firewood he climbed back into the house and went straight to the kitchen.

By the time he reached the kitchen, he was surprised at all because the big fish was not there anymore. But in the place of the fish that was placed before seemed a few pieces of gold. Startled and astonished at the strange circumstances, he left the kitchen and entered the room.
 
When the man opened the door, suddenly his blood heating up, because in the room stood a woman with her hair long and curly. The woman was combing her hair as she stood facing the mirror hanging on the bedroom wall. A moment later she suddenly turned around and looked at the man that stood bewildered at the mouth of the bedroom door. The man became very fascinated because the face of the woman who stood before him is very beautiful. He had never seen such a beautiful woman though formerly he had wandered far into the various countries.

Because it was night, the woman asked him to turn on the lights. After he lit the lamp, he invited her to accompany her to the kitchen because she wanted to cook rice for them. While waiting for the rice was cooked, the woman told that he was an incarnation of the great fish that he had gained when fishing in the river.
